Once that button was pushed again, all the info I thought was lost was there. I want to suppress this feature — always — for any two documents that I compare.

You can turn off the “Track formatting” setting in the Advanced Track Changes dialog box for documents where you don’t want formatting to be tracked. If you do that for a template, new documents based on the template will not track formatting after you enable Track Changes.

Unfortunately, when running a Compare, Word seems to activate the tracking of formatting again. In other words, as far as I can tell, you can’t get around this, other than hiding the format tracking after you have done the comparison. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. I can stop pounding my head on the keyboard wondering what I overlooked. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. I compare documents on a routine, daily basis in Word In records that I compare, I do not care about formatting differences. This thread is locked.
